가디너와 낭만과 혁명 오케스트라는 이미 1990년에 걸출한 독일 레퀴엠 레코딩을 남긴 바 있다. 20여 년의 시간이 흐른 뒤 이들의 두 번째 독일 레퀴엠 레코딩이 등장하였다. 2008년 에딘버러의 어셔 홀에서 있었던 콘서트 실황을 수록한 것으로, 합창음악에 대한 이 지휘자의 출중한 노하우가 응집된 연주를 담고 있다. 같은 작곡가의 교향곡 시리즈에서와 마찬가지로, 이번 신보에도 메인 프로그램과 관련이 있는 다른 합창음악을 함께 수록하였다. 브람스의 대선배격 작곡가인 하인리히 쉬츠의 '주의 장막이 어찌 그리 사랑스러운지요'와 '애통하는 자는 복이 있나니'가 그것으로 이 두 작품의 텍스트는 바로 독일 레퀴엠의 4악장과 6악장의 그것과 동일하다. 250년의 시간 차를 지닌 독일의 위대한 두 작곡가가 동일한 텍스트를 어떤 식으로 음악적으로 표현해내었는지 비교해볼 수 있는 흥미로운 기회를 제공한다.
